English Christmas Cake
Fruit cake is the first food item I always buy when I go to England. It is very different from American fruit cake in that it doesn't have large chunks of candied fruit but it does have currents and glace cherries. English Christmas cake is a darker version of the fruit cake. It is rich and moist and covered in a thin layer of marzipan and topped with royal icing.

I cheat a bit when I serve Christmas cake to me and Alex - I always give myself a bigger piece.

This is on its way to being a Discredited Trope: the latest Japanese census data shows that more and more people are marrying older, with most people under 25 remaining unmarried. Many teens and young adults have never heard of the concept and many that have think it's old-fashioned. Having a character believing in the Christmas Cake concept may mark them as being likewise old-fashioned.

Many years ago I made the cake in October, put it in the ex-toffee tin, sealing it with electrician's tape, and fed it brandy a couple of times, keeping it in a safe cool place, and then forgot about it. A year later I was looking for the Quality Street tin in preparation for making a (guess what?) Christmas cake, and found it again.
